Josh Staples (of The Velvet Teen), Sara Sanger & Julia Lancer formed The New Trust in early 2003, first as a vehicle for a handful of short, upbeat & dark, punk-tinged-pop-songs penned by Staples, but over the years have evolved TNT into a true collaborative vision of the three. Darker, starker, and more quixotic than ever, The New Trust's sixth album, "Upset The Tides" emerged from writing retreats to Lancer's new home in Michigan, where the band would focus on completing a few songs at a time, perform them throughout the Midwest, and then return to Northern California to perform & record with friend and engineer, Jack Shirley (Comadre, Loma Prieta, Joyce Manor). The new album is reminiscent of the band's beginnings - with ten songs in just around 30 minutes - but stylistically more lush and thoughtful, with recurring melodies and themes abound, surely reflecting the directions in which the group has grown in regards to both both their art and lives.

Nothing ever feels the same as the first time and you will never get as high, but you’ll keep climbing. I can’t tell what’s the greater shame: the losing someone, or the slowly getting used to a world without them. The magic doesn’t last.
Track Name: Linecaster
I cast a line to find a bond everlasting. No grays, all blacks and whites, all feasting or fasting. I cast a line to find a heart that’s unbreaking. I tread the path between what’s fate and what’s faking. You put my blindfold on me and pointed me south before you planted a kiss on my watering mouth. Under the blood orange sun - shirtless, drunk in the sand - I felt I held true love in the palm of my hand. Alas, the line I cast was fruitless, unyielding. I’d draw the X across the weapon you’re wielding. Stripped clean to the coffee and cream, little intelligent smile alludes to secret sex. Nothing on but the look in your eye, little arrogant smile alludes to secret sex.
Track Name: Heartbeater
There’s a change in the tides soon as it hits my blood. Stuck in a cave when the water showed up, and it sent me to the salty top, where I felt that my heart might stop and the door between our worlds unlocked. But I’m so delicate, my balance gets thrown. I see worlds that lie beyond our own - some with wildernesses twice as dark. And I felt that... as the sky began to shimmer apart. Hey, I’m in love with the quickening pace that sends my blood all over the place. I’m trying to spend my heartbeats all at once. And I heed the maddening voice (as if I ever had any choice) that beckons, spend your heartbeats all at once. That I might beat Poseidon awake, to drag me to the depths of the drink until I’ve had all that I can take and the doors between our worlds bust open.

Little birds who have a song all need to stand up strong and sing it. Send patterns through the trees, and voice what your little brains are thinking. Broken arm on your honeymoon, smiled and leaned into the face of doom. So sad you had to leave so soon, as it was I who’d encouraged you. Fell asleep just a mile from space, opened your eyes in a foreign place. Broken vows on your honeymoon, smiled and leaned into the face of doom.

Like the moon mirrored on the sea, in your eyes, I see reflections of me. And despite how you perceive my trajectory, I’ve been facing you and orbiting faithfully... and on and on until I extinguish. Though I’m drawn close to your body, I’m at the same time pushed away. Now the gravity is shifting, and I spiral toward your face, just to upset the tides.

To say there’s nothing new and all that’s modern is uninspired, every idea’s been used - you know that old excuse is tired. You kept me awake while I, concussed, would love to sleep. A land wherein every second lies a second chance. So tie this song around my waistline, the other end around your wrists. So if I wander off, you’ll drag me back across the distance, just like this...

Bloodmaker, cold death machine, life-ender tucked away in your pocket. Heartshredder, oh I long to see, to witness every last one taken away. No society is free from harm, and no one’s weaponless, so I’ve come armed only with a love as bright as the sun. Raise your arms to me, I’ll melt your guns. Those that want to save every unwanted fetus wouldn’t give a shit if you were shot in the street. I know the loss of your freedoms is fearful. I tried to argue, baby, I got an earful. What of my right to be free in this life not shot full of holes at the hands of a man whose panic-driven, knee-jerking mess of a life means freedom is a state he can’t understand? Your sad liberty, drenched in death. We sad liberals who cherish breath are coming with a love as bright as the sun. Raise your arms to me, I’ll melt your guns.

Wake up with our lungs fried, it sounds like it’s raining pianos. Smoke down by the oceanside and fire with the high tide. Other wildlife would flee while the wilderness burns. Faced with the flames, unflinching, escaping should be our instinct. Our love, wildfire, burns us awake. Drag our lips along the mountain’s face, turn to ruins in our warm embrace. We wade waist deep and cause the sea to boil. Lie exhausted, breathing ash and oil. We opened up our hearts, let the fire out - try as they might, nothing can extinguish our love.
